Karan Johar may be known for his candyfloss films, but on day two of the Times LitFest 2016, the filmmaker got eloquent about the tragedy of modern relationships.
In a session titled 'Men, Women and Loneliness' with Filmfare Editor Jitesh Pillai, he spoke at length about the growing distance between people and how social media and technology contributed towards it.
While Karan himself is quite active on social media platforms, he said he found it impersonal. "The only relationship many of us have is with our phones. We may cheat on our partners, but we don't cheat on our phones. We spend so much
of our mental energy on them. I don't want to be an uncle talking about the days of yore and I have to accept the reality of our times, but where are we heading? We are now seeing friends wish each other Happy Birthday on Twitter. Where is that phone conversation, or when we went personally and wished them? We don't do that anymore, we Tweet! Sometimes we see husbands and wives not communicating anymore, but they will definitely share pictures from their holidays. I don't know where the real organic relationship has gone; it's lost in the cloud of social media."
He even spoke about his battle with depression and indulged in a bit of self-critique. When an audience member asked him about Kajol's tomboy character from 'Kuch Kuch Hota' being a stereotype, Karan accepted his mistake. "That film is special for me, but Kajol's character is something I would not have put that way. In fact, Shabana Azmi called me after the film and scolded me. Now when I look back, I see the flaw in the logic that when she was a tomboy, she didn't have a boyfriend. But when she grew her hair and wore a saree, she did. I realise that the politics in KKHH are definitely questionable," he said.
